Commerical Driver’s License (CDL) Training

Below is an outline of the steps to complete the CDL Program at Gillette College

  • The program is a certificate program, not for college credit, so it does not qualify for the typical FAFSA federal financial aid. There currently only one option for financial aid:

The Wyoming Department of Workforce Services (DWS) has federal funding through the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA). The program has eligibility requirements, so you must contact your local state Workforce Center. For Gillette, the Workforce Center is located at 551 Running W Drive, Suite 100. Call the Gillette Workforce Center at 307.682.9313 for information.

Note: If you do not qualify for financial aid, you are required to pay the course fee in full before the first day of class.

  • Email scanned copies of the five (5) underlined documents listed below to dhowery@gillettecollege.org or bring copies to Del Howery, at the Technical Education Center 113C.

CFR 49 Part 383- Compliance Acknowledgement.

Driver’s License- If you do not possess a Wyoming driver’s license you will need to obtain your Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) from the state you are licensed in. Without the CLP you will not be able to obtain a CDL through the Gillette College CDL program. Please confirm with your state that they will accept your CDL completion certificate from Wyoming upon completion of the course. If you are under 21 from out of state, you will need to have a Wyoming CLP to train with us. To access the training manual and practice tests go to https://gowyld.driving-tests.org/wyoming/

Pre-employment Drug Test Negative Results- Student drivers must pass a drug screening at their own expense before they will be accepted into the program. The DOT only recognizes urinalysis as a valid means for drug testing. A rapid test will not be accepted. The regulations require 5-panel testing for the following classes of substances: Marijuana, Cocaine, Opiates, Amphetamines & Methamphetamines, and Phencyclidine (PCP). For additional information on the collection, please refer to: https://www.transportation.gov/odapc Employment Testing Center of Wyoming serves as the Third-Party Administrator (TPA) for drug testing for Gillette College. They are located at 1211 S. Douglas Highway Gillette, Suite 110, WY 82716. Their fee is $70.00 for testing and placing the student in the FMCSA random drug screening pool. NOTE: Individuals who initially receive a verified positive drug test result may not be accepted into the program

Medical DOT Certificate- Complete a DOT physical exam and obtain a Medical Certificate. This is sometimes available through your family physician. The provider must be on the FMCSA approved list of certified medical examiners. Employment Testing Center of Wyoming 1211 S. Douglas Highway, Suite 110 is one business on the FMCSA approved list that conducts DOT physicals and drug tests. Contact them at (307) 685-6442 to make an appointment. Their fee for both the DOT Drug Screen and DOT physical is $153 and it is at the expense of applicant.

Motor Vehicle Record (MVR)- Obtain at driver services at own expense ($5). It will state on this document if you are eligible for a CDL. Must be within the past 30 days. Once all the above documents are on file with us, we will register you for Entry Level Driver Training in partnership with JJ Keller as explained in the next bullet point.

  • This training will prepare you to test for your commercial learner’s permit (CLP). Complete approximately 20 hours of self-paced online training within 30 days. CDL instructor will monitor progress and will be available to assist. Notify the Program Manager when you have completed the training. Once verified, your score will be uploaded to the federal Training Provider Registry (TPR). Study for your CLP test using WYDOT practice tests.

  • You will need to cover the cost of the permit ($45). Please have your medical certificate with you when you test. Test for general knowledge, air brakes and combination vehicles. You do not have to test for tanker endorsement, but it is highly recommended. Email a copy of your permit to dhowery@gillettecollege.org.

  • The Program Manager will notify you when you may start BTW training.

•Classes meet Mon, Tue, Wed, Thurs, Fri from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

    •Class A classes are 3 weeks long.

The final practical exam (CDL exam) is administered by WYDOT examiners $85 (Student’s expense) per attempt and scheduled through Driver Services .

  • Your instructor will work with you to schedule this additional training during your course:

    •  Professionalism

    •  Wyoming Highway Patrol

  • Wait up to 48 hours after passing the final practical tests to ensure the certificate of training has been uploaded to the Training Provider Registry before obtaining CDL from WY Driver Services.
